Are peptides legal in Australia?

Short answer: it depends on the specific peptide and on why it is being supplied. There is no blanket ban and no blanket permission. Australia regulates substances one at a time through the Poisons Standard, which state and territory legislation then enforces, while the Therapeutic Goods Administration controls how therapeutic products are supplied, advertised and imported. Below is a plain-English explanation of how those pieces fit together, with links to the primary sources so you can verify each point yourself.

This page is general information about regulation, not legal or medical advice. Pepper Labs supplies laboratory reference materials for research use only and does not supply medicines or clinical guidance.

The framework

Three layers of Australian control

  1. 1. Scheduling. The Poisons Standard places each substance into a schedule. Schedule 4 substances are prescription-only medicines; Schedules 8, 9 and 10 cover controlled drugs, prohibited substances and substances of such danger that use is prohibited. A peptide's schedule — or absence from any schedule — is the first thing that determines how it may lawfully be held and supplied.
  2. 2. State and territory law. Each jurisdiction adopts the Standard through its own drugs, poisons and controlled substances legislation, and adds its own offences, licensing and record-keeping requirements. Two researchers in different states can therefore face slightly different obligations for the same material.
  3. 3. Therapeutic goods regulation. If a product is presented for a therapeutic use, the Therapeutic Goods Act framework applies: it must be registered or accessed through a lawful pathway such as the Special Access Scheme or an Authorised Prescriber, and advertising restrictions apply. Presenting an unapproved substance as a treatment is what most commonly turns a supply arrangement unlawful.

Common questions

Peptide regulation, question by question

Are peptides illegal in Australia?

Peptides are not a single legal category. Australian law regulates each substance individually. Many therapeutic peptides are prescription-only medicines listed in Schedule 4 of the Poisons Standard, a small number sit in Schedule 9 or 10, and some peptides are not scheduled at all. So the honest answer is that possession, supply and use depend entirely on the specific compound, its scheduling, and the purpose it is supplied for.

What does the Poisons Standard have to do with it?

The Poisons Standard (the SUSMP) is the national document that assigns substances to schedules. State and territory drugs-and-poisons legislation then gives those schedules legal force, which is why the practical rules can differ slightly between NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, ACT and NT. The Standard is maintained by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and is published and searchable on the TGA website.

Can a doctor prescribe peptides in Australia?

A registered Australian medical practitioner can prescribe a registered medicine according to its approved product information, and in defined circumstances can access unapproved therapeutic goods through the TGA's Special Access Scheme or Authorised Prescriber pathway. That is a clinical decision between a patient and their own practitioner. Pepper Labs is not a pharmacy, does not supply medicines and cannot advise on clinical use.

Is importing peptides into Australia allowed?

Importation is separately controlled by the Australian Border Force and, for therapeutic goods, by the TGA. Consignments of scheduled or unapproved therapeutic substances can be seized, and penalties apply for unlawful importation. Buying domestically from an Australian-based supplier avoids the import question entirely, which is one reason Pepper Labs packs and dispatches every order inside Australia.

What does research use only actually mean?

It means the material is supplied as a laboratory reference substance for in-vitro research and analytical work — assay development, standards, method validation — and not as a medicine, food, cosmetic or veterinary product. It carries no dosing information, no therapeutic claim and no clinical instructions, and it is not to be administered to humans or animals.

Who can buy research peptides from Pepper Labs?

Purchasers must be at least 18 years of age and must be a researcher or industry professional competent to handle laboratory reference materials, using them lawfully in a controlled setting. Submitting an order is a confirmation that both conditions are met.
